Did you know that very often, teeth tend to weaken as you get older? Fortunately, even though your teeth could weaken, you can still keep your teeth healthy and strong. For instance, you probably know that you’ll still need to brush and floss your teeth regularly and that you’ll need to attend regular dental checkups. But did you know that there are a number of other things you’ll need to do?
If you’re older, you’ll be more vulnerable to dry mouth than you were when you were younger. You see, many people take more medications as they age. Certain medications can leave you more vulnerable to dry mouth. If you have this issue, your mouth may not be able to produce enough saliva, leaving you more vulnerable to bad bacteria, tooth decay, and bad breath.
As your body ages, your teeth can also become more brittle, leaving them more likely to crack and chip. Either of these issues can also leave you more vulnerable to problems such as gum disease and tooth decay. Similarly, individuals with type 2 diabetes are more likely to have serious dental issues, such as gum disease or chronic bacterial infections.
We recommend scheduling regular appointments with our dentist, Dr. Justin Warcup, if you’re interested in avoiding these issues. Practicing good oral hygiene is also extremely important.
